How Trump has hacked into the presidential race, and what it means

December 10th, 2015

A hack is an exploit of a computer system to gain unwarranted access. Here’s how Donald Trump has hacked into our presidential race. Some simple math:

  • Half of American citizens don’t vote.
  • Half of voters are Republicans.
  • Fewer than half of Republican voters participate in the primary.
  • 1/2 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/8 = 12.5% of Americans

Guess where today’s recent polls put Donald Trump at? Yup, ~12% of Americans. I am terrified that tiny, passionate group has hijacked the Presidential race!

Luckily, a vast majority of American voters (~67%) actively oppose Trump. So, his chances in the general election are nil.

But a Trump victory–even in just the Republican primaries– spells doom for the Republican party and perhaps even the end of our two-party system. If he wins, the top of the ticket for the republicans will likely lose by one of the biggest landslides in history.

Will Trumps large lead translate to victory? Nate Silver says that voters will wake up a few days before election day. And Nate has a pretty track record for election predictions. Let’s hope he is correct again!

Thank you , Michael, for this math approach to the political scene/Trump. Very enlightening. I will pass this on!
